Housing rebound may make carpet less attractive for homeowners

On April 16, nationwide housing starts surpassed the million-unit mark for the first time since March 2008, according to a new National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) report. The organization indicated that total starts activity rose 7 percent for the month due to an increase in demand for multifamily residences.

As such, home and business owners in the greater San Diego area who are planning on remodeling may want to note that this development could affect their planning and budgeting.

For example, as stated in an April 12 Bloomberg article, the rebound in the housing market is “pushing up” the price of carpeting and rugs. The average price of these home amenities increased 2.5 percent in March, the publication noted, the highest uptick seen in this indicator since 2009. And prices could continue to rise with demand.

Earlier this year, Textile World, a monthly magazine focusing on global textile production, suggested that rug and carpet shipments could grow by as much as 5 percent in 2013. In its report, the source said that shipments could reach their highest levels since 2008 due to the rise in demand for tufted carpet and rug products.
